KWCH and DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers have joined forces to lend a Helping Hand, ensuring these children receive the dignity they deserve during their difficult journeys.

Empowering Foster Children, One Suitcase at a Time

Addressing the Challenges of the Foster Care System

The foster care system can be a daunting and overwhelming experience for children, as they often find themselves moving from one temporary home to another, with their belongings packed in nothing more than a plastic trash bag. This lack of personal belongings can be a significant source of distress and can contribute to a sense of instability and loss of dignity. Susan Peters, the founder of Susan's Kids, recognized the need to address this issue and took action.Three years ago, Peters launched a bag drive to collect suitcases, duffle bags, and backpacks for children in the foster care system. These bags serve as a tangible symbol of the community's support and provide the children with a sense of ownership and belonging during their journey through the foster system.

The Impact of Donated Bags

The response from the community has been overwhelming, with over 1,500 bags collected for the cause. Adrianne Moore, a representative from DCCCA, a local organization that works alongside the foster care system, expressed the profound impact these donations have had on the children they serve."To get 1,500 bags, it was a lot, and it meant a lot for the kids because these kids, they move from house to house to house, and they're going in a trash bag. They have nothing that is sustainable," Moore said. The donated bags provide the children with a sense of dignity and ownership, which can be particularly meaningful during a time of upheaval and uncertainty. As Peters eloquently stated, "These kids feel horrible anyway. But for them to receive something from the community that they know is from the community, that somebody purchased for them, makes them feel like gold."

The Collaborative Effort

The success of this initiative is a testament to the power of community collaboration. KWCH and DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers have played a crucial role in amplifying the message and encouraging the community to get involved. By partnering with Susan's Kids, they have helped to raise awareness and mobilize resources to make a tangible difference in the lives of these children. The Helping Hand award presented to Susan's Kids is a recognition of the organization's tireless efforts and the community's unwavering support. It serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact, and that by working together, we can create a more compassionate and supportive environment for those in need.As the bag drive continues, the community of Wichita remains committed to providing these children with the dignity and support they deserve. Through the collective efforts of organizations like Susan's Kids, KWCH, and DeVaughn James Injury Lawyers, the foster care system is becoming a little bit brighter, one suitcase at a time.
